About Reinvention

Reinvention_LogoIn January 2011, Reinvention began as a uniquely collaborative process led by task forces of faculty, staff and students who each spend a semester looking closely at areas needing improvement.  External advisory councils were also formed consisting of employers, civic leaders and foundations, academics, and community representatives. Their role is to provide guidance throughout the Reinvention process.

The City Colleges of Chicago has four goals for Reinvention:

  • Increase number of students earning college credentials of economic value
  • Increase rate of transfer to bachelor’s degree programs following CCC graduation
  • Drastically improve outcomes for students requiring remediation
  • Increase number and share of ABE/GED/ESL students who advance to and succeed in college-level courses

Introducing Reinvention

reinvention7In early April 2013, Reinventionkicked-off with the idea of bringing the power of Reinvention directly to each college.  A team of faculty, staff and students was established at each of the seven colleges to work on key college initiatives while working hand in hand with the teams at the district level and other colleges.

The first project being addressed by each of the teams is our Pathways Initiative.  This project calls for nothing less than planning and executing the work required to ensure that all CCC students embark upon academic pathways that 1) reflect learning and growth required to meet life, career and academic goals 2) are relevant to both employers and to four-year institutions 3) meet students where they are, both in terms of their college readiness levels upon admission as well as their anticipated schedule and other life needs.

  1. I am very unhappy with Richard J. Daley College because on their website they say they are “pleased to support student success through tutoring” but in reality they are not. I went to building 200 to for help in physics this semester and only to find out that Felipe the tutor is only there twice a week on Wednesday (during my physics class) and on Saturday from 12-3:30 and I’m working at that time. I asked if there was anyway that we could have more tutoring time for physics and they told me that” tutoring is not a necessity it is a privilege”. For a student who struggles with a class after studying for hour it is a necessity. I was told to go to any other city college for tutoring service. This is the 3rd semester I am told this about the tutoring service. I would like to know who I can talk to so there can be something done here because I have a good standing GPA and i do not want to ruin it because Richard J. Daley does not care about me.

  2. [...] Brandon Pendelton told us that special assignments will need justifications and the approvals will be given by Craig Lynch. All special assignment justifications should be tied to Reinvention Goals and should have measurable outcomes. Armen (or was it John Metoyer) mentioned that most of our justifications fall under Goal 2. Go here to see the 4 Goals. [...]

  3. I have just returned to the City Colleges after a five year absence, during which I taught at another community college. I am interested in being part of the reinvention process but did not want to completely remove myself from my job. I wonder how people can get involved in other ways.
